well, honestly, never saw ittoo scary. but his sanctimonious ww11 swill (schindler, pvt ryan)...with the swelling john wms score, the meaningful looks which were probably written into the screenplay, the utterly treacly shot of the waving american flag. it's so elementary hallmark and dull and predictable. but i will give jaws a shot. roy scheider, after all, has a soft spot b/c of marathon man among others.
The best Spielberg WWII movie is probably Empire of the Sun. This is due in large part to the weird story based on JG Ballard's life and the great performance by a young Christian Bale and a youngish John Malkovich -- oh wow, I just looked it up and turns out Ben Stiller is also in it?! Didn't remember him or wasn't aware of his existence when I saw the film. Oh, and it looks like the screenplay was by Tom Stoppard, so it can't be total dreck, right?
if you say so; i didn't see that one, though i like those actors. i was shocked at the all-star b-list of ryan (ed burns, vin diesel, ted danson). and i concede that i did in fact enjoy catch me if you can. but it was so un-spielberg. maybe he sticks to stories and not BIG IDEAS he's tolerable.
